Pilot Training
Gaining a private pilots licence
(helicopters) is both challenging and fun and, once completed,
will enable you to take family and friends flying to airfields
and private sites all over the country or indeed further afield
across the channel.
The PPL(H) course itself involves one to
one following a structured course set by the Civil Aviation
Authority. Flight training consists of a minimum of 45 hours
flying (39 if you already hold a fixed wing licence) including
training in general handling, navigation and dealing with
simulated emergency situations. During the course you
will also complete at least 10 hours of solo flying and 5 hours
of flying with sole reference to instruments. Towards the
completion of your PPL(H) training you will achieve a solo
flight to land away at two different airfields. The
theoretical training includes 7 multiple choice exams (listed
below). You will also learn how to use the radio to
communicate with air traffic control.
The Syllabus
1. Familiarisation with the helicopter
2. Preparation for and action after flight
3. Air experience - your trial lesson!
4. Effects of the controls - what the
controls do in forward flight
5. Attitude and power changes
6. Level flight, climbing, descending and
turning
7. Basic autorotation - 'gliding' a
helicopter
8. Hovering - the ultimate challenge!
9. Take off and landing
10. Transitions - from the hover to the
climb, and from the descent to the hover
11. Circuits
12. First solo
13. Sideways and backwards manoeuvres
14. Turns on the spot
15. Vortex ring
16. Engine off landings
17. Advanced autorotation
18. Practice forced landings
19. Steep turns
20. Advanced transitions
21. Quickstops - stopping the aircraft
safely from cruise speed at low altitude
22. Navigation
23. Advanced take offs and landings
24. Take offs and landings on sloping
ground
25. Limited power - learning to fly when
available power is limited
26. Confined area operations
27. Instrument flying
Before your first solo flight you must have
passed a basic medical examination by an Approved Aviation
Medical Examiner. This can usually be done locally and we
can provide you with the contact details of the appropriate
doctors.
Each training flight is preceded by a
pre-flight brief during which the objectives of the lesson are
explained and discussed, and followed by a post flight
discussion and debrief. All pre and post flight briefs
are included within the hourly flying rate.
The ground exams are integrated throughout
the course and the subjects are generally covered on the basis
of self study, although help and guidance will always be given
by your instructor. Additional training for ground exams
is available at a small extra cost and some group lessons may
be available.
Ground Exams
- Aviation law and operational procedures
- Aircraft general knowledge and principles
of flight
- Flight performance and planning
- Navigation
- Meteorology
- Human performance and limitations
- Radio telephony
The whole of the PPL(H) course, including
all the exams, the radiotelephony practical test, all the
flying training and the final flight test can be completed from
our base at Manston Airport. At the end of your course you will
have gained the competence, experience and knowledge necessary
to pass the general flight test and apply to the Civil Aviation

Night Rating
Once you have achieved 100 hours post
PPL(H) you can embark on a night rating. A night qualification
course consists of 15 hours of training - 10 hours on instruments and 5
hours at night. Whilst all the instrument flying is done with your
instructor, your night flying will include at least 5 solo circuits.
There is no test at the end of the course, and once you have
achieved the necessary hours and your instructor is satisfied, you can
apply to the C.A.A. for a night qualification to be added to your licence.
